I just unlocked the mana rifts last night. It's after the desert train, FYI. Trying to stay vague to avoid spoiling anything! I've not yet seen anything I can do with the obelisk but I still have a few areas to go. Ah perfect, thank you! I've done everything major, including all tombs including the pyramid and the runestones.

The train parts for that train you do not get until much later. Line to get them goes like this. WARNING spoilers ahead. 1. From sunburn desert, start the archaeology quest near pyramid.
